
icyou is the creation of the Benefitfocus Media Division. This team includes award winning journalists and photojournalists, top notch software engineers and graphic artists, a triple board certified MD and other medical experts. Read their bios below:
Nina Sossamon-Pogue, an Emmy award-winning television news anchor, is Director of Media for Benefitfocus, the parent company to icyou. With a background in investigative reporting, Nina was a popular on-air talent before joining icyou. Prior to that, she served as press secretary to Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards. Nina graduated from Lousiana State University and is a former member of the United States Gymnastics Team.
Photojournalist Ed Anderson doesn't say much as he prefers to let his video do the talking. A native of South Carolina, Ed worked in television news for almost a decade before joining icyou and has won numerous awards for his photography from organizations that include the Associated Press, Radio and Television News Directors Association, and the South Carolina Broadcasters Association. Ed and his beautiful wife Kim enjoy hanging out with their cocker spaniel, Belle and guinea pig, Mr. B.
Jason Bennett is the Production Manager for Benefitfocus Media’s state-of-the-art studio. He has been in the broadcast industry for more than a decade, working on everything from stock car racing to the 6 O’Clock News. Jason’s fluency in computer graphic design and animation rounds out his extensive experience as a director. With nearly 10,000 hours of live television behind him, he enjoys the new and exciting challenge of working with the icyou team.
As Senior Graphic Designer, Matthew Brown leads many efforts including print collateral, user interface design, video editing and graphic animation. Before joining the icyou team, Matt was the senior marketing designer for Benefitfocus. Matt graduated with a B.F.A. in Visual Communication Design from the University of Dayton in 2003 (Go Flyers!). He then flew south for the winter and has never looked back. In his free time you can find Matt with guitar in hand, in the great outdoors, on the golf course, or keeping up with the expanding mind of his 3-year-old-son, Tate.
Joy Capps is the Director of Corporate Communication at Benefitfocus. Over the past 22 years, she has worked with celebrities, politicians and world leaders while at numerous internationally renowned agencies and corporations, including Hill and Knowlton and Compaq Computer Corp. Her experience is complemented by her Master’s Degree and active involvement with the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Her peers tout her enthusiasm, energy, and willingness to serve as contagious. In her free time, she can be found “playing tourist,” reading and spending time with her 175 lb. roommate, Angus, a Great Dane.
Will Deupree is a survivor of four long winters at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he studied computer science and mathematics. He worked for several technology companies prior to joining Benefitfocus in 2002. He now manages the engineering teams for consumer-based applications. Will is an avid runner. He's completed several half marathons and is currently training for the Big Sur Marathon in California.
After working in the TV News business for 15 years, James Evans joined icyou in July 2007 as a photojournalist and director. His favorite part of the job is traveling and meeting new people. In addition to his career, James is also an amateur dog rancher and armchair football coach. James also considers himself very lucky to be engaged to the only woman in the world who could possibly overlook his ridiculous idiosyncrasies.
Edward Felch is a software engineer and an alumnus of the University of California, Santa Cruz. He worked in the Faculty Instructional Technology Center at UCSC, where he earned the SERAP award for student employee service. Edward escaped the gridlock of California in 2007 when he relocated to the South. He is the owner of two wonderful cats.
Shandon Fowler has more than a decade of experience with top media, interactive, and entertainment companies. Prior to joining icyou in November 2007, he was a Senior Program Manager of Messaging and Social Media Strategy at AOL. Previously, he was the Director of Media and Publications for the Tribeca Film Festival. Outside of work, Shandon enjoys playing with his son Spence, traveling with his wife Sydney, writing, cooking, taking pictures, making mix CDs, designing things, skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. His first book, The Groom's Instruction Manual (Quirk Books, 2007), is available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and other online and offline retailers.
Rebecca Fox is a producer/reporter for icyou. She graduated with honors from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and worked several years in television news. After covering everything from hurricanes to politics, Rebecca made the move to new media. She considers healthcare a wonderful arena in which she can help people understand their world. She's especially enjoyed helping her mother, Jane, share the story of her breast cancer treatment. You can watch Jane's videos here on icyou. In her free time Rebecca keeps busy studying Arabic, writing, spending time with friends and family, and running. Full disclosure: She doesn't run as much as she should.
Manon Husman, Producer/Reporter for icyou, was born and raised in South Carolina. She attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where she received her B.A. in Media Arts. After graduation, she traveled the world for many months before settling in Charleston. Prior to joining icyou, Manon was the videographer for the Motley Rice law firm, where she helped create and launch their marketing department. Away from work, Manon spends much of her free time traveling and with her family, friends and her dog, Bella.
David W. Smith is icyou's intern/utility man. Born in Scotland, David has lived in the States for 11 years. While in the U.S. he as enjoyed stints in Buffalo, New York and Columbia, South Carolina before settling in Charleston. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he earned his Bachelors in Advertising and Media Arts. An aspiring filmmaker, David's skills include graphic design, video editing and shooting.
Chasing man-eating crocodiles, climbing snow-covered volcanoes, dodging the planet’s most deadly snakes, and eating green ants along the way. This pretty much sums up icyou editor Steven Thomas' career as a television producer. Steven hails from Charleston but has spent most of the last few years exploring the world with the cast and crew of the hit television show, Exploration with Richard Wiese. Now, as a member of the icyou team, Steven sets off to explore—and edit—an entirely new world: the World Wide Web.
Charles Wyke-Smith, Director of User Experience at Benefitfocus, has been creating Web sites since 1994 and now focuses on user experience, information architecture, and interface design. He has developed sites and undertaken usability studies for organizations that include Wells Fargo, ESPNvideogames and University of California, San Francisco. As a speaker and instructor, Charles has also taught multimedia and interface design and presented at many industry conferences, including recent presentations at South By Southwest and the Voices that Matter design conference. He is the author of Codin' for the Web: A Designer's Guide to Developing Dynamic Web Sites and Stylin' with CSS: A Designer's Guide. The second edition of Stylin' is now available.
