Recession: Bad for Health
Jun 15
The recession has all of us looking for ways to reduce our spending and save money. However one area that Americans are cutting back in that has caused concern is their health.
Surveys, studies, and health experts alike have confirmed that the recession and fears of money problems have caused many to cut down on their prescription medications and skip or put off important routine health screenings and vaccinations. Those fears are not unfounded. A recent Harvard study found that medical bills were behind 60% of personal bankruptcies in the U.S. and, of those who filed, 2/3 were insured. This came as no surprise to people like Jeanne Sather who is insured and has been battled breast cancer since 1998- she is now broke, on the verge of bankruptcy, and close to loosing her home (you can read about her ongoing struggle in her blog The Assertive Cancer Patient). While stories like Jeanne’s may prompt you to forgo doctor visits in order to save money, you sacrifice your most important commodity- your health- in doing so.
