Our 10-Year Goal
To reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk 25% by 2010 by providing credible information for effective prevention and treatment with special emphasis on those at risk.
What Our Success Means to You
When we reach our 2010 impact goal, we will have 115,000 fewer cardiac deaths; 40,000 fewer stroke deaths; 13.2 million fewer smokers; 12.5 million people with lower blood pressure; 36 million with lower cholesterol; and 20 million people becoming physically active.
The Reality
• 1 in 5 Americans will experience some form of cardiovascular disease in their lifetime.
• In the U.S., more than 10 million children ages 6-17 are considered overweight (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
• CVD claims 1 in 2.4 women while only an estimated 8% of women know CVD is their greatest health threat.
• Approximately 40 % of African American women and 41% of African American men over the age of 20 have some form of CVD (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
Our Solution
• Awareness – Increase public awareness via educational campaigns of heart disease and stroke as the #1 and #3 killers of Americans·
• Knowledge – Educate healthcare professionals regarding the latest guidelines as determined by the AHA to treat heart disease and stroke·
• Advocacy– Educate lawmakers, public officials and the public-at-large, on the AHA’s position surrounding public policies that affect our nation’s health
• Action – Raise funds that support awareness, education and research programs in the Greater Charleston area.
