How the Body Works: The Anatomy of the Central Nervous Syst

Added: June 9, 2008 | Posted by: dizzo95 | Time 00:57 | Views: 85

The nervous system is a complex network of nerve cells and nerve fibers spread throughout the body. Its function is to interpret, store, and respond to information received from inside and outside. The central nervous system or CNS, consists of the brain and spinal cord and is responsible for processing information gathered from the rest of the nerves and transmitting instructions to the body. Messages passing to and from the CNS are carried by the nerves of the peripheral nervous system. This system includes twelve pairs of cranial nerves and thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Added: August 6, 2008 | Posted by: icyou | Time 00:58 | Views: 117

Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a disease that affects the central nervous system – that means your brain and spinal cord. Researchers believe it may be due to an autoimmune disease. That’s when the body attacks itself for some unknown reason. MS damages the lining of nerve cells, which in turn disrupts communication between the brain and other parts of the body. Symptoms of MS ranges from mild to complete life disruption.

Alcohol and the Body

Added: September 19, 2008 | Posted by: icyou | Time 01:03 | Views: 106

Alcohol depresses our nervous system after it is quickly absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream. Liver enzymes metabolize alcohol, but the liver can only handle so much at a time, about one drink an hour. Learn more about the effects of alcohol on the body in this video.

How the Body Works: Anatomy of the Hypothalamus

Added: June 11, 2008 | Posted by: dizzo95 | Time 01:45 | Views: 152

Connected by many nerve tracts with the brain and spinal cord, the hypothalamus acts as a link between the endocrine system and the nervous system. It functions automatically, monitoring and regulating the autonomic nervous system as well as the state of the body's metabolism through eating, drinking, temperature control, sexual drives and "fight or flight" reactions. It also controls the menstrual cycle and is thought to contain a pleasure center. Finally, it directs hormones released by the anterior pituitary gland. The anatomy of the hypothalamus includes:

How the Body Works: The Heart

Added: June 4, 2008 | Posted by: dizzo95 | Time 00:32 | Views: 149

The heart is a muscular organ which pumps blood throughout the body. The continuous driving force is generated by the action of cardiac muscle-a specialized form of muscle. The muscle is arranged as whorls of tissue surrounding the two cavities of the ventricles. The left ventricle is larger as it is required to pump blood around the general circulatory system. The right ventricle only pumps blood along the shorter circuit through the lungs. The autonomic nervous system controls changes in the rate of heartbeat.
