A landmark study released by Duke University Medical Center, the University of Michigan, the University of Iowa, the University of Southern California and the RAND Corporation in March 2008 showed that 1 in 3 Americans over age 65 will experience some form of memory loss. Another study, released by the Alzheimer's Association showed that 5.2 million Americans have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and that in the coming years nearly 1 in 6 women and 1 in 10 men over age 65 will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's. This video, part of a two-part series, illustrates how this degenerative disease not only impacts those diagnosed with it but also their caretakers — often their closest loved ones and lifelong companions.
John's wife Betty began showing warning signs of Alzheimer's disease, like short-term memory loss, in her late 50's. Eventually Betty's neurologist diagnosed her with probable Alzheimer's. John reached out to support groups and the Alzheimer's Association for help. He now leads two support groups in his community. Betty passed away at age 69.
