Blood cells originate from stem cells in bone marrow. Red cells are produced by a series of changes in stem cells in which the cell nucleus is lost and hemoglobin accumulates. The red cells then enter the circulation. The "blood-clotting" platelets, or thrombocytes, are fragments of cytoplasm from the stem cells. White blood cells-basophils, neutrophils and eosinophils-all have segmented or lobed nuclei, while monocytes and lymphocytes have single, more spherical nuclei.
