What is cervical cancer?

Added: August 7, 2008 | Time 01:13 | Views: 1,055

Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix…that’s the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. There are a number of factors that may increase your risk of cervical cancer. An infection caused by human papillomavirus, or H-P-V, is the main risk factor. Others include a weakened immune system, multiple sexual partners, cigarette smoking, use of birth control pills, and having many children. Most women who get cervical cancer are older than 40. Having a pap smear can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer. A pap smear is a pelvic exam where the cells of the cervix are scraped and inspected under a microscope. It helps locate abnormal cells early, when treatment is most effective. In advanced stages of cervical cancer, the most common sign is abnormal vaginal bleeding which may be accompanied by weakness and feeling faint or light-headed. Women with cervical cancer may be treated with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination. Watch more video about cervical cancer or share your story or experience on video with icyou.
