HealthDay TV: Baking Soda and Kidney Disease

Added: September 2, 2009 | Time 01:16 | Views: 57

Like you, I've heard that baking soda can keep your fridge fresher; in fact, I may have a box or two around to help do just that. Now, breaking news says a daily dose of baking soda -or sodium bicarbonate- may do so much more.

According to the study, published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, a daily dose of baking soda can slow the decline of kidney function in patients with chronic kidney disease. The study included 134 patients with advanced chronic kidney disease and low bicarbonate levels, a condition known as metabolic acidosis. The researchers found that the sodium bicarbonate slowed kidney decline down to normal age-related rates, as well as improved the nutritional status of patients. And those taking sodium bicarbonate were also less likely to develop end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis.

While the results need further validation, these initial findings suggest that a simple remedy like appropriate use of baking soda can be very effective. Effective simplicity? Great news in a complicated time. I'm Dr. Cindy Haines, for HealthDay TV.
