Hi, I'm Dr. Cindy Haines bringing you this week's news for your health....
Finding the time to unwind may be the best medicine you can give yourself...according to 2 new reports.
The first... published in the journal of the Association for Psychological Science...reviews the growing research on stress and our bodies. The conclusion? Stress can wreak havoc, in part by hampering the ability of our immune system to fight off disease and help us heal.
The second study by researchers in Pennsylvania included 1400 adults...and revealed that those who spent more time visiting friends, playing recreational sports and going on vacation had lower blood pressure, a smaller waist, and lower cortisol levels...all positive health indicators.
The bottom line, be aware of your stress level and take steps to control it. Leisure time can help.
For kids nationwide, it's about time to hit the books again.... but research shows many teenagers may be too wired to focus on school.
According to a study published in the journal Pediatrics, caffeinated teens are staying up late -- surfing the web, texting on their cell phones and watching TV. The students involved in the research reported consuming a variety of caffeine beverages, sometimes taking in the equivalent of 14 cups of coffee in one day.
They're also not getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep at night. A full 30 percent of the students admitted they've fallen asleep in class.
If you're a concerned parent, experts recommend you discourage your teens from consuming caffeine past noon, and keep TVs, computers and handheld communication devices out of kid's bedrooms.
A better night time school routine may ease daytime struggles for the entire household.
