Our lungs are among the largest organs in our bodies. They are located on the right and left side of the heart and are protected by our rib cage. They are responsible for keeping our cells and tissues alive by supplying them with fresh oxygen. What they do is take a gas that your body needs to get rid of -- carbon dioxide -- and exchange it for oxygen. The airways that bring air into the lungs (the trachea and bronchi) are made of smooth muscle and cartilage, which allows the airways to constrict and expand. Because the lungs are very moist, though, they can be an optimal breeding ground for bacteria…leading to bronchitis and pneumonia.
