Dr. Shalini Shenoy, director of the bone marrow transplant program at St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, has developed a reduced intensity condition protocol that has made it possible to use bone marrow transplantation for more children, with better results. Formerly considered a treatment specifically for cancer, Dr. Shenoy and her research colleagues have successfully cured non-malignant disorders like hemaglobinopathies, immune deficiencies, bone marrow failure and metabolic disorders with bone marrow transplants. The key is the right mix of pre-transplant conditioning.
