What is a miscarriage?

A miscarriage is also known as a spontaneous abortion. It’s when a pregnancy spontaneously ends by the 20th week. Most miscarriages occur when the unborn baby has irreversible problems and they are unavoidable. The best way to think about it is that birth is being avoided because of difficult survival challenges. It’s estimated the rate of miscarriage is up to 33-percent of known pregnancies. The risk for miscarriage is higher in women older than 34, those with certain medical conditions, or those with a history of more than two prior miscarriages.
