What is postpartum depression?

What makes the news are the horror stories – mothers so affected by postpartum depression they end the lives of their children. Postpartum depression is said to affect up to one-third of all new mothers and can occur up to one year after the baby’s birth…and while it IS a serious diagnosis, many women can be successfully treated. Postpartum depression can make one feel restless, anxious, fatigued and worthless…in extreme cases women stop eating, have trouble sleeping and become frantic…these women usually need to be hospitalized. Postpartum depression is different from the “baby blues," which lead to feelings of elation one minute and feelings of gloom the next.
