Were the cochlea uncoiled it would be a continuous tube divided into three separate compartments-the scala media, the scala tympani and the scala vestibuli. Sound waves are transmitted in the scala vestibuli and reach the organ of Corti on the basilar membrane, where they stimulate hairlike receptors, whose tips are fixed in the tectorial membrane.
